Someone asked about the technique I used outdoors today (Saturday May 9th) on this painting. I tried something a bit different today and I figured it would be nice to post it, as long as I can say on the front end, take everything with a grain of salt. As my friend and mentor, T. Allen Lawson, has said: "Every Painting is a Crapsshoot."

The limited palette is everything! Zorn used mainly White, Black, Yellow Ochre, and Red. Talk about limited, but the results are amazing. I have been using this lately:
Permalba White
Lamp/Mars Black
Cadmium Yellow Medium
Raw Umber
Pretty darn limited? You would be surprised at how versatile it is. Of course, I always put a touch of Red and Blue in my Black to keep it lustrous and velvety, and not paste-like matte. Green of course is made with Black and Cad. Yellow; used with white and a drop of Raw Umber, this can make a great sky color. True, one may wonder at the logic [...]
