As I looked around the Farnsworth Museum in Maine, I walked through each room and scanned the pastiche of traditional and contemporary and sculptural art ubiquitous and roughly tied together through concept--or at least architectural space. I turned a corner and froze. There, as if I became suddenly and mystically aware of past, present, and future--time and non-time--all because of this painting that captured an element of my soul. It has provided endless fascination for me to consider why a great, master artist will do almost the unthinkable: assist with another's artistic growth. Great artists are constantly asked to give of their time and talent, so why on earth--as my thinking will sometimes go--would they choose to give to anyone--even me--this valuable gift? The question remains elusive as it never escapes me that I bring so little to the table in return.
