Zurbaran. St. Francis Contemplates a Skull
The painting here is not mine, but by the 17th century Spanish artist, Zurbaran, a great Chiaroscuro painter fond of St. Francis as subject matter. This painting is where it all began. I first saw it years ago when I had not a penny to my name, roaming around St. Louis on a brutally hot & humid summer day, single, alone, and just sort of "lost" in a world where I didn't really know the rules, how to do things other people did, and being on my own most of my life I was at a crossroads.
